As the world works towards a greener future, initiatives such as “Cold Ironing,” or “shore-to-ship” power, are being pushed to ports all around the world. A joint Spanish and US Naval base located in Rota, Spain is one of the many ports around the world working to reduce air pollution and noise emissions through shore-to-ship power solutions rather than on-board generation while berthed. This process sends power from the shore’s local grid, through port transformers and switchgear, to ships while berthed at the port.
VanTran provided two stainless steel, 4000 kVA, substation transformers to match up with new switchgear and power receptacles. All equipment is installed on one common skid right next to the port to provide power to ships such as the warship depicted here while at port.
